چکیده

Let F3(n;m) be a random 3-SAT formula formed by selecting uniformly, independently, and with replacement, m clauses among all 8 n3 possible 3-clauses over n variables. It has been conjectured that there exists a constant r3 such that for any > 0, F3(n; (r3 )n) is almost surely satisfiable, but F3(n; (r3 + )n) is almost surely unsatisfiable. The best lower bounds for the potential value of r3 have come from analyzing rather simple extensions of unit-clause propagation. Recently, it was shown [2] that all these extensions can be cast in a common framework and analyzed in a uniform manner by employing differential equations. Here, we determine optimal algorithms expressible in that framework, establishing r3 > 3:26. We extend the analysis via differential equations, and make extensive use of a new optimization problem we call “max-density multiple-choice knapsack”. The structure of optimal knapsack solutions elegantly characterizes the choices made by an optimal algorithm.

Let F3(n, m) be a random 3-SAT formula formed by selecting uniformly, independently, and with replacement, m clauses among all 8 ( y ) possible 3-clauses over n variables. It has been conjectured that there exists a constant 7-3 such that for any E > 0, F3(n, (r3 e)n) is almost surely satisfiable, but F3 (n, ( 7 3 + E).) is almost surely unsatisjiable. The best lower bounds for the potential va...

Goldreich’s One-Way Function Candidate and Drunken Backtracking Algorithms

One-way functions are easy to compute but hard to invert; their existence is the foundational assumption for modern cryptography. Oded Goldreich’s 2000 paper “Candidate One-Way Functions Based on Expander Graphs” [6] proposes a candidate one-way function construction based on any small fixed predicate over d variables and a bipartite expander graph of right-degree d. The function is calculated ...

Exponential Lower Bounds for DPLL Algorithms on Satisfiable Random 3-CNF Formulas

We consider the performance of a number of DPLL algorithms on random 3-CNF formulas with n variables and m = rn clauses. A long series of papers analyzing so-called “myopic” DPLL algorithms has provided a sequence of lower bounds for their satisfiability threshold. Indeed, for each myopic algorithm A it is known that there exists an algorithm-specific clause-density, rA, such that if r < rA, th...

A Single Supplier Procurement Model With Random Yield

In this paper, we develop a procedure for selecting a supplier. Suppliers are characterized by their lead time, price and quality (random yield). Each purchased item is acceptable with a given probability and independent of the others. We assume the demands are deterministic with no set-up cost and backordering is allowed. For each supplier, an optimal ordering policy is developed. We prove the...

Observed Lower Bounds for Random 3-SAT Phase Transition Density Using Linear Programming

We introduce two incomplete polynomial time algorithms to solve satisfiability problems which both use Linear Programming (LP) techniques. First, the FlipFlop LP attempts to simulate a Quadratic Program which would solve the CNF at hand. Second, the WeightedLinearAutarky LP is an extended variant of the LinearAutarky LP as defined by Kullmann [6] and iteratively updates its weights to find auta...
